With 300 hours as a pilot of Fairey Barracudas in WW2 I can say that this British naval aircraft was useless and often dangerous for the following reasons. It was underpowered and overloaded and even with RATO only just managed to become airborne on escort carriers WITHOUT a bomb load thus making it useless as a warplane. The Fairey-Youngman dive brakes/flaps when in the dive brake mode was a killer. When releasing the dive brakes at the bottom of a dive the control column seized up and the aircraft tried to invert, requiring emergency recourse to elevator trim tab, a difficult manoeuvre when close to the ground/sea. It killed one of our squadron in training.
